Investigator health/sanity sliders and skill/focus sliders. Eventually, we scrapped the sliders and went with peg boards instead.

hey all i read all our comments and thank you!

I have a question about secrecy! on a skill check when the players say for example "i will contribute high or low" do they do it before the skill check or during the skill check when their turn comes?
either, but if you do it before, there's the understanding you can always be lying when it comes time to actually contribute. You can say "medium" if you lie about putting in more than 1 card, but you can't even lie about "1 card medium".

If you look at page 30 of the rulebook, you'll see that the 'Commit Characters to the Quest' step is highlighted in green, indicating you can play actions during that time. Thus, you can Sneak Attack a character in and commit it to the quest.

How well it works as a challenging strategy game with plenty of meaningful choices compared to 1st ed

Descent 1st ed's biggest strong point was the complexity of the game mechanics (also it's biggest drawback ultimately as our games would drag on for hours of discussion and decision paralysis). I understand that the playtime has been 'streamlined', but at what cost?

The official answer I got from Nate some months ago was "Any hero that was used in the game, but is not in play at the end of the game, should be considered "dead" for scoring purposes."

Ah, thanks. This would answer question 1: "in deck" is not "in play", so the hero is dead for scoring.

It wouldn't resolve question 2, though: a hero attached to Nameless Thing is, I think, "in play"? He is an attachment that is attached to a card that is in play, so this makes him "in play" himself, I think.

It does take away some of the strategy. However, it makes completing routes a lot more difficult. Also, stealing of partially completed routes becomes more of a strategy element. I don't use the spinner all the time; but, its nice for a change of pace here and there.

The question is valid, though. I suppose this is one of the inconsistencies you have to take for granted with Descent (or have to houserule). I do wonder what the reasoning is behind this ruling.

The ruling in the FAQ is to address this problem:

(yes, we're using Doom figures, but I didn't have the Descent TileSet when I originally made these images and I'm too lazy to recreate with Descent figures :P)

The marine cannot see the zombie due to the LOS blocking obstacle. The marine cannot see the Imp because of the zombie. However, that makes little sense. If the marine cannot see the zombie, how can the zombie block line of sight to the imp? The marine cannot SEE the zombie!

This becomes exacerbated when you have a line of figures:

The players around here have called this the Conga Line. If you play that figures outside LOS still block LOS (as the normal rulebook states), not a single one those Zombies is in the Marine's LOS. Seems a little silly doesn't it? If you follow the ruling in the FAQ, then the Green Zombies are in LOS and can be shot at. It also makes sense, that the figures blocked are leaning against the wall behind the obstacle/zombie, which exposes the other zombie behind him for a clear shot.

Having figures outside of LOS not block LOS to other figures makes sense when you're dealing with figures that are only 1 square in size. A game like Space Hulk (third edition), this works great. This breaks down though when you deal with figures larger than one square in size, such as this example:

The marine cannot see the demon, so can he see the zombie? Ironically, look at this example:

If you follow the FAQ, in BOTH examples, the marine CAN see the green zombie. However, it only makes sense in the second example, seeing through 2 zombies is easier to do than seeing through a demon.

So, either play by the rules+faq, or house rule it. Honestly, it comes up so rarely that I think we've only discussed it once in our group. We decided to let common sense dictate how we play. In this case, we ruled that large creatures simply cannot be seen "through" even outside of LOS, which bends the FAQ ruling but makes the game still playable and enjoyable for all. (so in the above examples, the marine would not be able to fire at the demon or zombie in the first, but could fire at the green zombie in the second).

Player scalability; how does the dynamic change with different number of players and if some number of players raises above others.
