Heroic Gypsies are very strong. Since Gypsies thrive when you pull up your pieces and attack anew each turn, you typically will only be holding three to five regions. Put heroes in your two most vulnerable regions and you can hold them with one Gypsy each, leaving the other nine to hold all the others. It will be expensive for your opponent to conquer any of your regions.
Were-Skeletons will murder people if you bring them out in an even-numbered turn. Often you can take over six or more occupied regions. You'll gain enough Skeletons to hold your own for a turn, and then you can go nuts again.
I like Merchant Amazons as a closer. Amazons are great for conquering regions, just not for holding them. The Merchant power doubles your returns for that turn, and the Amazon power counteracts the major downside of Merchant.
Ransacking anything is a lot of fun, especially in two-player games. I especially like Ransacking Elves because they can smash opposing players without losing any pieces.
