You WILL have fun with one of each pack. It is just that most of us have chosen to buy 2+ of everything. However, 2x the X-Wing and TIE expansions are NOT required. The upgrades and pilots from one of each will usually be enough. When you want more, buy another core set.Again, though... this game is fun with almost any amount of ships. Plus, others in your area may have ships to help with larger battles. You don't need to buy everything at once.
Purchase schedules for competitive builds will probably look similar to below:
1: Core Set
2: 1x Each Expansion
3: Core Set #2
4: TIE ADV #2
5: Y-Wing #2
6+: Preference
I am sitting at 2x Core, 1x X-Wing, 1x TIE, 2x TIE ADV, 4x Y-Wing and my next purchases will be 1x A-Wing, 1x TIE INT, 2x MF, 2x Slave I. One of each of the big ships will be shelved for display but the extra cards will be put to great use. For example, the MF comes with 1x Assault Missiles. This card is insane for either faction. There are other new upgrades which go well with Wave 1 ships, as well.
