I have no little trouble getting the tiles to fit on top of the insert. You just have to do a little bit of Tetris-ing. Don't just throw them tiles all in at once; carefully place them so you have as few layers as possible. I think I can usually pack it such that there are about six or seven layers.

However! I should also mention that I keep some of the tiles in plastic bags in the middle. I keep all of the 2x1 pieces together, all of the 2x2 pieces together, and the few (four?) 2x4 pieces together. With those in the middle of the insert, the rest of the tiles will stack on top with enough clearance to fit the box top on.

The monster figures I keep in the spaces underneath the insert. Everything else goes in the middle valley.
