The premise skews the question which is actually straight-forward: which version do you play (notably not which version do you prefer?). What is missing in the poll is the option to answer "both," which would have been my answer. Both are perfectly legitimate ways to play and it is a strength of the game that it gives you that choice.

I started out (from an Age of Steam background) assuming I would prefer the standard version of Steam and played that way initially more often than the basic version. However, over time, I came to appreciate the basic version over the other and will happily play either (and I sometimes think in some ways it is superior). I might have preferred terms other than "basic" and "standard" as I think they convey the wrong impression.

The question was phrased that way for a reason. I just recently bought both games. I had previously only played Steam once, with base rules. I bought a whole bunch of expansions for each as well. I am just trying to figure out the best way to enjoy both. Was just wondering if people used Steam for the base game, as a more newbie friendly introduction.. or because it changes the flavor of the game a bit.. and is a way to differentiate the 2 more.

For those who may care, I just bought:

Age of Steam-
Age of Steam: St. Lucia
Age of Steam: Atlantis
Trisland
Age of Steam : 1867 Georgia Recon
South Carolina
Oklahoma Land Rush
Age of Steam: Sun(
London Great
Age of Steam: Scotland
Age of Steam: Japan
Age of Steam: Montréal Métro
Age of Steam Expansion: The Zombie Apocalypse Michigan
Zombie Apocalypse Western Pennsylvania
Age of Steam: The Moon
Berlin Wall:
Holland
Madagascar

Steam
Steam Expansion 1 Mid Atlantic US
Belgium & Luxembourg
Brussels Metro
Steam Expansion 2 Great Britain
California 2090
China
Steam Sicily and Malta

I have and played all of those and they are good selections. I introduce newbies to steam all the time with the standard game but allow each newbie to take loans at any time on their turn (part of base game) its never been a problem.

I should also mention that I picked those expansions specifically because I'd prefer to play mostly 3 player, with the occasional 2 or 4 player games.
